Nellie Mae Butler
Nellie Mae (Deere) Butler was born to Thomas Deere Harjo and Lantha Thomas on October 2, 1943 in Wetumka, Oklahoma. She passed from this life in Tulsa on July 25, 2020 at the age of 76.
She attended Eufaula Boarding School and graduated from Sequoyah Vocational School in 1962. She obtained her beautician license in Texas but worked at the cleaners in Tulsa as a presser for forty years. Before she retired, she worked at Walmart in the bakery, which she really enjoyed. She loved to cook and spend as much time with her family as she could. She was very active within her church, Springdale Baptist, and enjoyed attending Falls Creek every summer.
Nellie will be missed dearly, especially for the strength she carried through this life and the love she had for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Richard Deere; one sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Fields; one son, Wesley “Junior” Butler; and one great-grandson, Zayden Butler.
She is survived by two brothers, Tommie Harjo of Wetumka, Oklahoma, and Roy Harjo; one daughter, Debbie Hedge of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one son, Vincent Butler and wife Lisa of Cromwell, Oklahoma; eight granddaughters: Deborah, Patsy, Aundrea, Justina, Wesla, Maleah, Jacinda, and Sherry; six grandsons: Billy, James, Roy, Tyler, Andy, and Samuel; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous family members and friends; and her dear friend, Larry.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 1:30pm at the Alabama-Quassarte Community Center in Wetumka, Oklahoma. Pastor Jason Pyeatt will officiate. Pallbearers will be Billy Hedge, Roy Hedge, Tyler Hedge, Andy Butler, Samuel Butler, and Damion Noriega. Honorary Pallbearers will be James Hedge, Jeremy Davis, Chebon Yargee, and Cheyenne Yargee. Interment will follow at the Harjo Family Cemetery.
