Wetumka Fire Department recently provided mutual aid to the Weleetka Fire Department during a dual structure fire at the corner of 8th and Choctaw Streets in Weleetka. According to Wetumka’s new Fire Chief, Cody Wright, the Weleetka Fire Department was initially re- sponding to a grass fire when the structure fire broke out.

Read moreOklahoma’s 1907 constitution provided that Black and white children must attend separate (racially segregated) school facilities, a situation that endured unchanged for half a century. “Separate,” however, did not necessarily mean “equal” in the quality of education provided. In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, sounding the death knell for segregated educational facilities by ruling that separate schools failed to provide Black children equal protection under the law. That is, they were inherently (and actually) unequal.

Castle Township, which surrounds IXL, and Paden Township, its neighbor to the west, were heavily populated with African American farm families at least as early as 1900, as indicated by U.S. Census reports.

The football team played Ft. Hayes and came away with a win. It was an enjoyable weekend visiting with Makai, a senior Pitt State track member. While there, the family was able to visit with Sharon Dean, wife of Harvey Dean, former basketball and trach coach at Weleetka High School and former coach of Shirley Nero. Coach Dean was ill and unable to attend the game or visit with anyone.
