Rockie James Mitchell
Rockie James Mitchell passed away at his home in Lamar, Oklahoma on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the age of 73 years.
Rockie is the son of Richard Hester Mitchell and Delia Ruth (Allen) Mitchell, born on January 10, 1951, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was brought up and attended schools in Tulsa’sDawson community and graduated Will Rogers High School with the Class of 1969.
Following graduation he joined the U.S.
Air Force and
served his country in 197071. He met Carolyn Marie Ellison in 1974. They were married in Tulsa on June 15, 1976, and again on March 29, 2008 in Lamar.
They lived in Tulsa until 1993, then on Rockie's family land in Talala until moving in January 2012 to Lamar, their home for the past twelve years.
Rockie worked most of his life self-employed in home and lawn maintenance. A manicured yard was his thing. He worked hard running the family business and the family farm at the same time, and he loved his work. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and music. He was a talented and accomplished musician and played guitar, piano, harmonica, and saxophone, and enjoyed playing for the kids and teaching them about music. He loved children and animals. More than anything, he loved entertaining his children and grandchildren and spent countless hours building swings, buying bicycles or fixing bicycles, saddling horses, keeping go-carts up and running, building a playhouse, and much more. He was dearly loved.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Delia Mitchell; two sisters, Darlene and Francis; and two brothers, Richard and Rudy.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn, of the home; six children, Michaela
Mitchell of Tulsa, Jessica Mitchell-Gibson (Kyle) of Tulsa, Rocky Mitchell (Judy) of Langley, Andrea Comeau (Daniel) of Lamar, Gidget Parris (Bruce) of Lamar, and Lucas Mitchell of Talala; thirteen grandchildren, Steven, Skylar, Kaylee, Jeremiah, Lindsey, Elijah, Lillian, Agustus, Cassidy, Troy, Noah, Liam, and Leland; two great-grandchildren, Iverson and Adler; two brothers, Michael Mitchell and Roger Mitchell; one sister, Rebecca Ellison; godson Tommie Glenn; nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends.
