Service Held for Brenda Yvonne Smith

Funeral services for Brenda Yvonne Smith were held Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Wetumka. Interment followed at the Wetumka Cemetery.

Brenda Yvonne Smith was born November 17, 1952, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Robert and Ruth (Doodle) Wendell. She passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 71.

Brenda was a longtime resident of Wetumka. She attended Wetumka Public Schools until her junior year when she moved to Wilburton and graduated from Wilburton High School in 1971. Brenda married David Smith on January 20, 1969, in Okemah. She later went on to receive her bachelor's degree in elementary education and master's degree in elementary counseling from East Central University in Ada. In 1988, Brenda began her teaching career at Justice Schools for two years.

She then started a 34-year career with Wetumka Public Schools teaching third grade many years, reading interventionist first – eighth and testing coordinator first – eighth grade. She was a dedicated and responsible educator having received the honors of Alpha Plus Reading Teacher of the Year 2017-18, Outstanding 4-H Leader and High School Cheerleading Coach. She enjoyed walking, loved talking on the phone, music, art, traveling and shopping for her grandkids.

She is preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Robert George Smith.

Survivors include her daughter, Julie Smith of Ada; her son, Gary Smith of Wetumka; her husband, David Smith of Wetumka; three grandchildren, Emilia Grimes and husband Will, Gregory Bailey and wife Haley and Lexie Smith; two great-grandchildren, Lenni Grimes and Georgia Grimes; cousin, Tom Nunn and wife Deanne of Edmond and several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Serving as pallbearers were Will Grimes, Ron Smith, Derek Nunn, Bryce Smith, Geordan Smith and Gregory Bailey. Services were under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Wetumka, Oklahoma and officiated by Rev. Claude Butler and assisted by Rev. Daniel Ingle.
