Service held for Ruth Lee Briggs

Ruth Lee Briggs passed away in Oklahoma City on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at the age of 85 years.

Ruth was the daughter of Joe and Polly (Tebe) Brown, born on September 9, 1933, at Sasakwa, Oklahoma. She was brought up and attended schools in Sasakwa, and graduated from Chilocco Indian School.

She was married to Elzie Briggs, and spent most of her adult life in Spencer, Oklahoma. She worked for a while as a nurse’s aide. In her spare time some of her favorite things were browsing garage sales and thrift stores. She loved going to church and was a member of the Indian Baptist Church of Sasakwa. What she loved most was caring for her home and children, and picking up her grandchildren and going to watch their various activities.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Polly Brown; her husband, Elzie Briggs; one son, Harold Jerome Nelson; two sisters, Mollie Brown and Josephine Brown; one brother, Buster Brown; and one nephew, Willie Chupco.

She is survived by eight children, Chester Nelson and Charles Nelson, both of Midwest City, Larry Nelson (Virginia) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Ruford Nelson (Tina) and Lillie Nelson, all of Oklahoma City, Rhonda Briggs of Choctaw, Gwendolyn Weintraub (Timothy) of Spencer, and Jacqueline Briggs of Del City; 29 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wisey Mae Brown and Tootsie Brown, and one brother, Larry Brown, all of Holdenville; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 11th , 1:00 p.m. at Salt Creek Methodist Church in Holdenville, and Ruth was laid to rest at the Brown Family Cemetery. Rev. Vincent Roland was the officiating minister. Pallbearers were Ruford Nelson Jr., Larry Nelson Jr., John Nelson, Chester Nelson Jr., Timothy Briggs II, DeQuan Nelson, Harold Nelson, Willie Evans Jr., Ruford Nelson III, and Barry Brown.  Honorary pallbearers were Paul Rich III, Tony Alfred, Chester Nelson, Charles Nelson, Larry Nelson, and Ruford Nelson.
