Sue Ann Davis
Sue Ann Davis, 84, of Lamar, Oklahoma passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at home surrounded by her family.
She was born December 26,1935 at the Lawton Indian Hospital, the daughter of the late Cheparney and Martha (Bruner) Davis. Sue Ann was raised in the Holdenville area in her younger years, baptized at Many Springs Baptist Church in 1947. Sue Ann was very active in the Southern Baptist churches where she lived: Little Springs, Oklahoma City, First Indian Holdenville, and her current church Faith Baptist Church in Dustin where she played the piano.
She attended Eufaula Boarding School and graduated from Holdenville High School in the class of 1954. After high school, she attended Oklahoma Baptist University and Bacone College, then completed her studies at Northeastern Oklahoma College in Tahlequah with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She also studied at Arizona State University while she was working in Arizona.
She worked as a teacher in Indian Education in New Mexico, Tuba City, Arizona, Inner Mountain, Utah, Chilocco and Riverside Indian Schools in Oklahoma. Sue Ann also served as the JOM Coordinator at Seminole Public Schools and Moss Public Schools just before her retirement.
Sue Ann loved to travel, she even traveled to Europe and Scandinavia in her youth. She enjoyed spending time with her family and church family, she was an active member of NIAWA, and her local Elder’s Association Women’s Prayer group.
In the Mvskoke language, the word for aunt is mommuce or “little mother”, she was our mommuce and was also known as Granny Annie. She loved her nieces and nephews, they often traveled together, she encouraged their opportunities for learning, and took care of them as a mother.
Sue Ann is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Leo King, Frank Davis, Merle Davis, and Christine (Davis) Wolfe; her nephews Bobby Isham and Michael Isham; niece Marietta Davis; and four great-great nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her nephews and nieces Ted Isham, Robert Glen Isham, Jerome Isham, Susan Isham, David Isham, Arlene Isham, Leslie Kaniatobe, Robert Davis, Colleen Toney, James Davis, Deanna Davis, Mark Davis, Bobby Davis and Choya Davis. She is also survived by 49 great nieces and nephews; 77 great-great nieces and nephews; plus 2 great-great-greats nephews.
She is now in Jesus’ arms with no cancer and celebrating with our loved ones who have gone on before her. Sue Ann leaves behind a legacy of steadfast faith, serving others, love for travel and learning.
Graveside services were held on Monday, November 2nd, 1:00 pm, at the Lamar Cemetery, with Rev. Larry Factor officiating.
