George Douglas Scott

George Douglas ‘Doug’ Scott passed away at his home in Holdenville on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the age of 85 years.

Doug was the son of Wilmont Scott Sr. & Lizzie Harjo, born on December 4, 1938, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. He was brought up and attended schools in the Yeager community. He played baseball and basketball in high school, and graduated Yeager High School in

1957 with the final graduating class of Yeager schools. He had a love of learning and continued his education at Northeastern University in Tahlequah, Bacone College in Muskogee, University of Chicago, and Virginia Tech. He earned a master’s degree in education and was working toward a PhD.

Doug joined the U.S. Marines and served for three years, mostly in the U.S. at Fort Pendleton, and for a brief time in Japan. Following military service he settled in the Washington D.C. area during the 1980s and worked for the BIA as Superintendent of Schools. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico for the Department of the Interior, assisting tribes with educational programs. His assistance was not limited to tribal schools and communities, Doug used his expertise and influence to help anywhere in any way he could. In the early 1990s, after working with the BIA at nu- merous schools, Doug's final assignment was in Tucson AZ, where he established a school system on the Tohono O’odham Reservation and served as Superintendent. He retired from that position and returned to Oklahoma to live near his mother in Holdenville. He married Willena Waldroup in Holdenville on March 8, 2008.

Doug was a member of Salt Creek Methodist Church. He loved history, he loved travel. He enjoyed golf and reading, and always emphasized the importance of continual learning.

He continually encouraged family and friends to pursue education and knowledge. His lifelong love for learning, as well as his life experiences, made him quite knowledgeable and insightful, and he was described by many as an impressive and most interesting man. He was very much loved, and will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilmont Scott Sr. and Lizzie Bruner; four brothers: David Bruner, casualty of the Vietnam war, Melvin Bruner, Wilmont Scott Jr., and John Scott; four sisters: Ann Inay, who died in a car crash at the age of 21 along with her husband Emilio and their one-year-old son John David, Catherine Scott, Marjorie Ingram, and Mary Shirley; son-in-law Les White.
