Service held for Artie Mae Carter
Artie Mae Carter passed away in Holden-ville, Oklahoma on Friday morning, May 17, 2019, at the age of 90 years.
Artie was the daughter of Walter Marvin Hill and Mattie Florence (Allen) Hill, born on August 22, 1928, in Spaulding, Oklahoma. She was brought up and attended various schools in Hughes County. She raised her own children in Yeager until her marriage to Garland ‘Pop’ Carter in the Spring of 1963, then both families moved together to Spaulding. She managed her household (which included a hot breakfast every morning and fresh bread every night) and corralled nine children while working at various clothing factories, including Seamprufe in Holdenville and Lillian Russell and Custom Size in Wewoka. She was an accomplished seamstress and often did alterations in her home.
Artie was energetic and creative, and always busy. Some of her favorite things were sewing, gardening, and quilting, and she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and the Rubik’s Cube. If you asked one of her kids, they would say there was nothing she couldn’t do (including sewing up an injured pet chicken!) She loved playing darts, board games, puzzles, wrestling with the boys, and a whole lot of other shenanigans with her grandkids. She was a long-time member of the First Church of God in Holdenville.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mattie Hill; her husband, Garland ‘Pop’ Carter; two sons, James ‘Jim’ Carter and Lonnie Carter; three grandsons, Garland Sanchez, Walter Barksdale, and Bradley D. Carter; two brothers, James Daul Hill and her twin, Archie Boyd Hill; and one sister, Hazel O’Kelly.
She is survived by seven children, G. W. ‘Wayne’ Carter (Larisa) of Wewoka, Jean Elliott (Clinton) of Holdenville, David Carter (Shelley) also of Holdenville, Linda Johnson of Batesville, Arkansas, Kenneth Storts (Marta) of Holdenville, Terry Kirby (Donna) of Tecumseh, and Cathy Barksdale (Michael) of Shawnee; 29 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Julie Stackhouse, Alphie Bue, and Helen Skagen; one brother, Jerry Hill; a host of nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 22nd , 2:00 p.m., at First Church of God in Holdenville, and Artie was laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery at Yeager, with Rev. Jon Ewers officiating.
