Nita Kay Jacobs
Nita Kay Jacobs passed away Thursday, December 24, 2020, at her home in Holdenville, Oklahoma at the age of 72.
Nita Kay was born January 6,1948 in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Sweed “Kansas” Jacobs and Joan Harjo Burges. Nita Kay was raised in the Seminole County area. She attended Summer Chapel, Jones Academy and Carter Seminary schools. She went on to Sulphur VoTech for secretarial school and she also attended Seminole Junior College. She went on to work for Seminole Nation CHR where she retired in 2003.
Nita Kay was a member of the Tusekia Harjo Band. She loved Elvis, loved to go shopping, to travel across the country and to go to Graceland. She was a gospel singer and has performed in Nashville and had her part in writing the song The Light House and Here’s My Cup. She also has performed on television.
Nita Kay enjoyed visiting with her family, her kids, grandchildren, brothers and her sisters. She enjoyed going to the casino and having a great time and loved her menthol cigarettes. Most of all she loved her church and loved her pastor., Nita Kay donated the church bell at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church.
Nita Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Joan Harjo Burgess; her father Sweed “Kansas” Jacobs; brothers Robert Lee West, George Burgess, and Samuel Harrison; her son Billy Burgess; one granddaughter Baby Girl Wood; and one great grandson Alias Wood.
Nita Kay is survived by her children Anthony “Buddy” Wood of Holdenville, Russell Berryhill and wife Tamara of Okemah, Tommy Overbey and wife Michelle of Seminole, and Lydia Overbey of the home; brothers and sisters Amelia Harjo of Seminole, Shirley Harrison of Wewoka, Charlie “Bone” Burgess of Wolf, Joammie Wood of Seminole, Claude A. Burgess of Konawa, Gwen Warrenburg of Aberdean, South Dakota, Marcella Bryan of Tulsa, and Herb and Pat Johnson of Stratford; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one greatgrandson she raised, Josiah Powell, of the home; and her best friend, Frank Walters of Allen.
She was taken to her home in Holdenville for viewing on Saturday; wake service was Sunday, December 27 th . On Monday, December 28 th , she was taken to Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church for a 2:00 pm funeral service with Rev. Houston Tiger officiating, assisted by Jason Tiger. Interment followed at Burgess-Harjo Cemetery in Wolf, Oklahoma.
Pallbearers were Anthony Wood Jr. Jimmie Wood, Walker Williams, Bruce Wood, Russell Berryhill Jr. and Andy Berryhill. Honorary pallbearers were Marcella Bryan, Lydia Overbey, Charles Burgess, Claude Burgess, Herb Johnson and Johnny Harrison
Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home.
