A group of individuals representing Tulsa’s most talented and successful professional workforce community began a journey in March 2021 to visit the Thirteen Original Historically All-Black Towns of Oklahoma. They completed that journey on August 28, 202, driving their own vehicles, meeting each town mayors and citizens while learning and experiencing the histories of each individual towns. They learned how towns collaborated and networked to build communities and survived until this day. Historian, Shirley Nero, and husband Donnie Nero guided them along the way.

Helen was born June 22, 1943, in Holdenville, Oklahoma to parents Wesley and Anna Johnson. Helen was raised in a loving home by her mother and grandmother. After graduating from high school in Holdenville, Helen attended college in Ada, Oklahoma at East Central University. Helen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business, English and secondary education. She continued to earn a master’s degree in secondary education at East Central University and secondary administrative certification from Northern Arizona University.
