BETTER SCHOOLS AMENDMENT

Oklahoma’s 1907 Constitution provided that black and white children must attend separate (racially segregated) school facilities, a situation that endured unchanged for nearly half a century. “Separate,” however, did not necessarily mean “equal” in the quality of education provided. In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, sounding the death knell for segregated educational facilities by ruling that separate schools failed to provide black children equal protection under the law. That is, they were inherently (and actually) unequal. With federal funding for education now threatened by any refusal to adhere to the court’s interpretation, most states took measures to integrate their public schools. Oklahoma, the only state with a constitution that mandated separate schools and different funding methods for each, could not simply pass a law requiring school integration.

Labor Day is coming soon. Clearview will be filled with Golden family members as they return for their annual family reunion held every year since 1924. Pray for Sharon Johnson Patton, formerly of Weleetka, who has spent several days in the hospital. Continued prayers L. C. and wife Irene, as she is his care giver and for those on the sick list. Marjorie Plunkett, Kurrilue Johnson, Billy Walker, Eugene” Cowboy” Tyler, and especially Jean Chatman Jackson who has been placed on hospice.

Gale Lucas Parker will host a grand opening her restaurant/store in Clearview on September 11, 2021, in honor of her mother Wanda Jean Lucas. Everyone is excited about the new business in town, especially a new eating place specializing in hometown favorites. The location is Main Street and Clearview Road, at the four-way stop. Details of the opening are coming.

Coming Soon

There is no official date of the opening of the Clearview’s new welcome center. Now with Clearview becoming a part of the Oklahoma Black Town’s tourism trail, it is fitting to have a place to sell items of memorabilia representative of Clearview and the surrounding area. The town trustees are working out the details and should be open soon to visitors. The center is located on Main Street across from the War Memorial.

The Tulsa Remote Group

The Tulsa Remote group of Tulsa’s most talented and successful workforce community began a journey in March 2021 to visit the Thirteen Original Historically All-Black Towns of Oklahoma have just completed on August 28, 2021, their quest. This diverse, bright, and driven group drove miles throughout the Muscogee, Seminole, Potawatomi, Sac and Fox, and Oklahoma Territory to visit the towns of Summit, Taft, Redbird, Tullahassee, Rentiesville, Vernon, Clearview, Boley, Grayson, Langston, Lima, Tatums, and Brooksville, also the IXL, Wewoka, and the Oklahoma History Center. Along the way, the group learned how the towns collaborated and networked to build communities. They gained valuable history lesson and historical content as well.
