African American Newspapers

The first African American newspaper of record in Oklahoma history was the Oklahoma Guide, a monthly, sporadically published in 1889. Thus, the black press in Oklahoma paralleled the opening of the territory in 1889. The Guide was followed in 1891 by the Langston Herald, the first weekly. Both were part of two well-established traditions. The first was the “Boomer Press” that was organized to agitate for the formal opening of the Oklahoma Territory and its settlement. However, the second tradition devolved from the Kansas experience of men like Edward P. McCabe, former state auditor, and William L. Eagleson, former editor of Kansas’s first black newspaper. They used African American newspapers to promote the settlement of the All-Black towns in Oklahoma.

Clearview Received COEDD Grant

Early in 2020, the Town of Clearview received a $30,000 grant to upgrade the men’s and women’s bathrooms at the Clearview Main Street Community Center. The bathrooms needed handicapped stalls and additional stalls and sinks. The grant did not cover the entire cost. Through the sales of Clearview Cookbooks, online garage sale items, and individual donations, the town was able to cover the additional cost. Thanks to all who purchased items and made donations. The town could not do it without assistance. The town appreciates and thank Riddle Construction Company of Weleetka for their great work and patience while working with the town.

Glenda Stinson hosts Red Hatters 4th of July picnic

There were nine Red Hat Ladies that enjoyed the comfort of Wayne and Glenda Stinson’s patio for their 4th of July Picnic event. Glenda had tables decorated with red tablecloths with red, white and blue streamers on the long table and candles on the round table on the deck. She had red, white and blue streamers on all the post. And just in case we had to go inside, she had made beautiful place mats set on the table with red, white and blue ribbons hung in the dining room. It was a festive time full of decorations. Everyone brought a sack lunch of some kind and some were from Subway! Everyone had something different. Two of the Wanda’s brought a delicious chocolate cake full of cool whip! Yum!! Joyce Yates gave the invocation. After a brief business discussion, Glenda agreed to be our treasurer! Yea! Thank you, Glenda,! We tabled the prom/ scholarship discussion until March 2021. Barbara Tiger said that she and Joyce Brinlee would plan for the month of August. That will be the second Saturday in August. I wonder just what they will have in store for us! Margie Mairel is still recovering from her stroke, Mary Kelley had toe surgery, Joyce Brinlee was working and Randa Phillips was out running around! While we acknowledged her birthday, we failed to sing to Joyce. Sorry about that! Happy Birthday Joyce and Randa! Those attending were Wanda Shaw, Joyce Yates, Barbara Tiger, Sharon Dilday, Glenda Stinson, Linda Tyler, Lynn Marquis, Wanda Price and Cindy Mc- Daniel.

Around Town

The Interstate Highway system offers many advantages, mostly in the realm of arriving at your destination in less time. But for those of us who traveled on more traditional highways (and a few dirt roads), we miss the scenery, especially the Burma Shave signs.
