Seminole Nation Museum board president Barbara Butner and docent Phyllis Williamson man the refreshment table at the 2023 Holiday Bazaar. The Bazaar kicks off the holiday season in Wewoka and fills the museum with the Spirit of Christmas as the aroma of freshly made baked goods and sweets fills the air, lively carols and Christmas tunes ring throughout the building, and people crowd the galleries seeking perfect gifts to put under their trees, or that “just what I need” buy for themselves.

The smell of freshly baked bread wafts through the air at the Holiday Bazaar each year as patrons supply dozens of kinds of out-of-the-oven goodies to benefit the museum. Yeast rolls, kolaches, gingerbread men, cream horns, coffee cakes, focaccia, baguettes, pound cakes, pumpkin breads, cinnamon rolls, and many other yeast breads like rye, sour dough, and Tuscan join dozens of cakes, pies, candies, and other assorted goodies for holiday tables.

Bright rows of savory, garlic cheese apples – so called because they are rolled in paprika and topped with holly leaves to look like apples – await being bagged and tied with vibrant holiday ribbon. The cheese apples are a 50-year tradition at the Seminole Mation Museums’ Holiday Bazaar, dating back to 1974 when Lucy Cook brought a dozen to be sold at the first fundraiser.
